Childhood, Summer & a Splash of Nostalgia
Summer is, and always will be, a child’s favourite time of the year. The school bags are set aside, mornings are slower, and the excitement of summer vacation begins to set in. But as temperatures rise every year, summer also brings new challenges—especially for parents who want their children to enjoy the season safely.
Still, there’s something magical about this time. We all carry memories from our own childhood—those long, carefree days spent playing gully cricket, hide and seek, or board games with cousins. When there was no internet, no screens, just laughter echoing in open verandahs and cold mango slices shared after a long day of play. And who can forget the joy of visiting nani’s house? A place more special than any vacation resort.
Today, time has changed. But the urge in children to play outside hasn’t. They still run, laugh, sweat, and keep going—unbothered by heat or dust. And honestly, we shouldn't stop them. These are the golden memories they'll carry forever. But while we let them live these moments, it’s also our job to make sure they’re cared for—protected from the sun, nourished, and hydrated.
Let’s dive into some smart parenting tips to help your child enjoy the summer—safely and joyfully!
1. Keep Them Hydrated All Day
Water is your child’s best friend in summer.
-
Encourage them to drink water frequently—even if they’re not feeling thirsty.
-
Add fruit slices like lemon or orange to make it more fun.
-
Coconut water, fresh fruit juices, and homemade lemonade are great options.
-
Avoid sugary sodas and too much packaged juice.
2. Dress Light, Stay Cool
-
Choose loose, cotton clothing in light colours to keep their body cool.
-
Hats and caps are essential for sun protection during outdoor play.
-
Sunglasses (with UV protection) are great for eye safety too!
3. Sunscreen Isn’t Optional
Whether it’s cloudy or sunny, the sun’s rays are harsh.
-
Apply a gentle, kid-friendly sunscreen (SPF 30+) before they step out.
-
Reapply every 2–3 hours if they're playing outdoors or in water.
4. Time Outdoor Play Wisely
Try to avoid playtime during peak heat hours (11 AM – 4 PM).
-
Plan morning or late evening play sessions.
-
Parks, shady areas, or indoor play zones work best during the day.
-
Always keep a water bottle and cap in their outdoor bag.
5. Make Summer Snacking Healthy
Replace chips and sweets with hydrating, summer-friendly snacks:
-
Watermelon, muskmelon, oranges, cucumbers.
-
Yogurt, buttermilk, fruit smoothies, popsicles made at home.
-
Keep it light, fresh, and full of nutrients.
6. Create Cool Indoor Fun
When it's too hot to go outside, make inside just as exciting:
-
Create an indoor summer corner with books, puzzles, and activity kits.
-
Nature crafts, painting, or even building blanket forts keeps the fun going!
-
Let them journal their summer adventures or read a new story each week.
7. Water Play = Instant Relief
If you have a balcony or backyard:
-
Let them play with buckets, small tubs, or sprinklers.
-
Water balloon fights, sponge toss, or DIY car wash games are a hit
Always supervise water play for safety.
8. Encourage Downtime
Hot weather can make children feel more tired than usual.
-
Encourage a short nap or quiet time after lunch.
-
Avoid overstimulating activities during mid-day. Rest is important for their energy levels and immunity.
9. Watch Out for Overheating
Children may not recognise early signs of heat exhaustion. Keep an eye out for:
-
Fatigue
-
Dizziness
-
Headache
-
Red, flushed skin
In such cases, move them to a cool place, give water, and allow rest.
Summer Memories, the Safe Way
Summer isn’t just a season—it’s a feeling.
Let your child soak in all the joy, freedom, and fun that summer brings. But as they chase butterflies or dribble sweat after a game of football, make sure you're gently guiding them through hydration, care, and rest.
Because someday, when they grow up, these hot summer days will become the sweetest, coolest memories.
In our words: “Summer is like that fresh breeze that finds us when we're playing under the scorching sun — a moment of calm, like the shade of a tree, comforting and unforgettable.”
