Back-to-School Checklist for Parents and Kids: What to Pack and What to Prep

A Fresh Start Begins with Smart Preparation

It’s the first day back to school. For days now, we’ve all found comfort in our cozy beds, slow mornings, and breakfast in bed. And why not? After the pressure of exams, every child (and parent!) truly deserved a break. Lazy afternoons, movie nights, outings with friends, and shopping sprees with family — the holidays gave us time to recharge.

But now, imagine slipping back into your school shoes after all that well-earned rest. That moment of stepping into your classroom again brings with it a feeling of achievement — you made it through the exams, and now you’re stepping into a whole new session of possibilities.

So what are you waiting for? Get up, get dressed, and don’t forget — your school bus is waiting!

To help you and your parents get everything just right, we’ve created a simple checklist. From school supplies to emotional readiness, here’s what you need to make sure your first day back is full of excitement — not chaos:

School Supplies ✔️
Healthy Lunchbox ✔️
Water Bottle ✔️
Emotional Readiness ✔️
First Day Jitters ❌ (Let’s leave those at home — your bag’s heavy enough already!)

What to Pack: Essentials for the School Bag

  • Stationery Supplies: Pencils, erasers, pens, crayons, ruler, glue stick, scissors, and sharpener — make sure they’re labelled! These come in handy for class activities and homework.

  • Books and Notebooks: Usually provided by the school — ensure they’re covered, labelled, and packed according to the timetable. One for each subject or a multi-subject notebook to keep things neat.

  • Water Bottle and Lunchbox: A leak-proof, easy-to-open bottle and a compartmentalized lunchbox for healthy meals.

  • Name Labels or Tags: Use them on every item — even on shoes and bottles.

What to Prep: Ready the Mind, Routine & Space

  • Adjust Sleep Schedule: Begin resetting the bedtime routine a week before school starts.

  • Morning Routine Practice: Try a few trial runs of getting ready on time to reduce the chaos on Day 1.

  • Organize a Study Corner: A quiet, tidy spot at home with a lamp, books, and supplies to encourage homework time.

  • Go Over School Timings & Transport: Make sure your child knows the new schedule and how they’ll be getting to school.

  • Talk About the School Day: Discuss what to expect — subjects, playtime, new friends, and teachers.

  • Revisit Reading Habits: Start reading together daily — bedtime storybooks or early learning encyclopedias can ease them back into the learning mindset.

  • Pack in Some Positivity: Add a small note or sticker in their lunchbox for the first week — a little love goes a long way!

Make It a Confident Comeback

Starting a new school year doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With the right mix of planning, preparation, and emotional support, your child can walk into school with a smile and a sense of confidence. So sharpen those pencils, pack those bags, and let’s make this school year the best one yet!
