Ease the Transition with Simple Tips for Parents
Summer holidays bring sunshine, late nights, spontaneous play, and freedom from routines. But as the school year peeks around the corner, both parents and kids often face the challenge of shifting gears.
To make the transition smooth and stress-free, here’s how you can gently prepare your child for school in the final days of summer.
1. Re-establish a Bedtime Routine
Summer nights often mean late bedtimes and lazy mornings. About a week before school starts, gradually move bedtime earlier by 15–30 minutes each day.
-
Avoid screens at least 1 hour before sleep
-
Read a calming bedtime story
-
Use dim lighting and a consistent “wind down” routine

2. Set a Morning Routine Too
Wake your child a little earlier each day to help their body adjust. Include steps like:
-
Brushing
-
Getting dressed
-
Eating breakfast
-
Packing a bag (even as a pretend game!)
Create a visual morning routine chart for younger kids to follow!
3. Get the School Supplies Ready
Let kids be a part of the school prep. Take them to buy or organize:
-
Stationery
-
Lunch boxes & bottles
-
Backpack
-
Notebooks & books
This helps create excitement and a sense of control!
4. Talk About School Positively
Chat about school in a fun and calm tone. Ask questions like:
-
“What are you most excited about?”
-
“Which friend are you excited to see again?”
-
“What will you pack in your tiffin on Day 1?”
Revisit happy memories from last year to boost confidence.
5. Reintroduce Light Learning Activities
No need for serious lessons! A few fun, educational activities help kids get back into the habit of thinking and concentrating:
-
Sticker Books
-
Reading stories or fact books like Big Book of Inventions
6. Acknowledge Their Feelings
Some kids may feel anxious about returning to school. That’s normal!
-
Let them talk about their worries
-
Share your own school experiences
-
Remind them that it’s okay to feel nervous — and that it will pass
7. Get Back to Mealtimes
During summer, meals often become irregular. A few days before school starts:
-
Set regular breakfast, lunch, and dinner times
-
Include kid-friendly healthy options like fruits, nuts, and yogurt
-
Plan ahead for lunchbox ideas together
8. Visit the School (If Possible)
For younger kids or first-timers, take a school tour or walk/drive by the school to rekindle familiarity. It eases first-day jitters.
